Meeting at the Mountain State Fair

At the end of every summer, the North Carolina Mountain State Fair just south of Asheville draws citizens from all over the region. This year, the Marsy’s Law for North Carolina team spent 10 days attending the fair, despite some stormy days from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey. This year’s attendance was estimated at more than 150,000 people – and the MLNC team spent time speaking directly to voters educating them about the victims’ rights constitutional amendment being considered in the Legislature and need for North Carolina to enshrine rights for victims directly into the state constitution.

The team also continues to get positive feedback and support from local law enforcement who, as first responders when a crime occurs, know first-hand the importance of providing equal rights to victims. During the Mountain Fair, the MLNC team received the endorsement of Buncombe County’s longtime sheriff Van Duncan as well as the two candidates running for his seat when he retires this year.

The Marsy’s Law NC campaign continues to build momentum across the state spreading the word to North Carolina communities and voters about why North Carolina needs to guarantee rights for victims of crime in our state constitution.  Marsy’s Law will give victims co-equal rights that the accused and convicted already have – and give victims the dignity and respect they deserve.
