Coalition to Improve Upon Measure S Announces Support From South Dakota Sheriffs

Coalition grows larger with these public servants agreement with proposed compromise

PIERRE, SD — This morning, the Coalition to Improve Upon Measure S announced the endorsement of the South Dakota Sheriffs’ Association in addition to the individual support of 34 local sheriffs from across South Dakota in support of H.J. Res 1004 which would improve protections for victims of crimes while maintaining all of the rights preserved in the state’s constitution when South Dakotans voted to pass Marsy’s Law.

“The support of these local sheriffs is proof that the efforts made by the Coalition to Improve Upon Measure S are aligned with the desires of law enforcement,” Speaker Mark Mickelson (R-Sioux Falls) stated. “South Dakotans are extremely proud of the men and women who wear the shield of a police officer or the star of a sheriff’s deputy. Their support of this effort echos the level of commitment to safeguarding constitutional rights for crime victims that this Coalition has to all South Dakotans.”

“The collective work of the Coalition to honor the desire of the voters by improving Measure S speaks volumes to the caliber of public servants serving South Dakotans,” said Erinn Mahathey, South Dakota State Director for Marsy’s Law. “Ultimately, our shared desire for enforceable constitutional rights that are easily and efficiently preserved, protected, and defended by all levels of the justice system made this process possible and these elected Sheriffs are the front lines to protecting all South Dakotans; their support of this effort is much appreciated.”
