MARSY’S LAW TO HOST PRESS CONFERENCE IN SIOUX FALLS WITH HOUSE SPEAKER, MARK MICKELSON
Sioux Falls, SD – Marsy’s Law for South Dakota will host a press conference on Monday, May 21 in Sioux Falls. The event features Speaker Mark Mickelson who will join Marsy’s Law advocates and volunteers to discuss the organization’s June 5 ballot initiative – Amendment Y – and the importance of protecting crime victims’ “co-equal” rights under the state constitution.
Marsy’s Law was officially passed by voters on November 8, 2016, with 60% of South Dakotans voting in favor of the constitutional amendment (Amendment S). On June 5, constituents will get to vote on Amendment Y, which aims to strengthen Marsy’s Law by giving victims the choice to opt-in to receive their co-equal rights. Rights include, but are not limited to, receiving information about the services available to them as well as notifications on proceedings and major developments in their criminal case.
This improved version of Marsy’s Law would help law enforcement communicate better, making it easier to work with the public to solve crimes.
“Marsy’s Law gives the victim and the victim’s family members the same “co-equal” rights as the accused and the convicted – nothing more, nothing less,” said Speaker Mark Mickelson in a recent interview.
The press conference starts at 9am CDT outside of the Federal Building and United States Courthouse (400 S Phillips Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104).
The event is free and open to the public and press. Media can RSVP to Sarah Shriver at [email protected].
